What Can Go Wrong Without a Professional Pool Startup?
A newly plastered pool is highly sensitive during its curing period—and even minor missteps can lead to major problems. Without a professional startup, improper water chemistry and poor maintenance can cause irreversible surface damage, resulting in costly repairs and a significantly reduced lifespan.
Here’s what can happen when the startup process is skipped or mishandled:
Etching & Surface Erosion:
When water is too acidic (low pH) or chemically aggressive, it begins to dissolve the plaster itself. This leads to rough, uneven textures, pitting, and a dull appearance that can’t be reversed without resurfacing.
Staining & Discoloration:
Unbalanced water can react with metals and organic materials, leaving behind blotchy stains, mineral deposits, and uneven coloration. These visual defects permanently alter the look of your pool—even if the plaster was applied perfectly.
Calcium Scaling:
High pH, high calcium hardness, or rapid chemical imbalances can cause white, crusty calcium buildup on the surface. This scaling not only affects the look and feel of the pool but can also clog filters and damage equipment.
Surface Dusting:

Chemicals
We provide all necessary startup chemicals, including high-grade sequestering agents, to ensure your water is properly balanced and your new plaster surface is protected from staining, scaling, and mineral buildup from day one.
Gradual Chemical Balancing
We carefully adjust water parameters in stages—not all at once.
This includes:
Lowering or raising pH to maintain a non-aggressive balance
Adjusting alkalinity for buffering stability
Setting calcium hardness to a safe range for plaster protection
Rapid changes can shock the new plaster, so all adjustments are made gradually to prevent surface stress or chemical reactions.
Controlled Sanitizer Introduction
Chlorine is added slowly and safely, typically starting around Day 4 or once plaster dust is under control. Too much sanitizer too early can bleach or stain new plaster. We maintain proper free chlorine levels without shocking the pool.
Daily Brushing & Surface Conditioning
We recommend all surfaces be brushed at least twice daily during the first week to remove plaster dust and encourage even curing. This prevents hard-to-remove dust from bonding into the finish and helps maintain consistent surface texture and color. We thoroughly brush once each visit. The pool owner is responsible for additional brushings.
Post-Startup Equipment Optimization
Once the startup process is complete, we will transition your pool equipment back to standard operation, ensure all systems are running efficiently, and clean or service filters as needed to remove any residual plaster dust or debris—leaving your pool fully balanced, clear, and ready for regular use.
Ensure a Flawless Finish by Following These Critical Steps
To protect your new plaster finish during its most delicate phase, it’s essential to follow specific guidelines before, during, and after the startup process. Even small oversights can result in permanent surface damage, void warranties, and reduce the life of your pool’s finish.
Before plastering, make sure all pool equipment is fully operational. Filter systems, pumps, valves, and automation must be functioning correctly to support the startup process. Also, confirm that the pool is completely leak-free. Any structural or plumbing issues should be addressed prior to plaster application, as water loss during curing can lead to uneven coloration, cracking, or other surface problems.
When filling, the pool must be filled in one continuous motion. Once the water begins flowing, do not shut it off until it reaches the midpoint of the tile line or skimmer. Stopping the fill prematurely will leave a visible ring or stain at the waterline.
During the startup, do not allow anyone or any pets to enter the pool until the startup process is fully complete. The new plaster is extremely fragile during this phase, and any contact with the surface can result in permanent marks or footprints.
All equipment, including pumps and filtration systems, must run consistently during startup. Proper circulation helps maintain water balance and supports the even curing of the new surface. During this time, do not operate the pool heater or activate any solar heating systems. The use of heating equipment during the startup can damage the plaster and equipment.
Do not use any automatic pool cleaners during the startup process. Robotic, suction, and pressure-side units can drag across the fresh plaster, causing streaking or damage. Brushing is required but must be done only with soft-bristle brushes approved for use on new plaster finishes. Hard-bristle brushes can scratch or scar the surface, leaving permanent marks.
